'It's a valentine to country music'
In Year of the Horse, the 1997 documentary about the rock'n'roll band Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Young articulates in a reflective moment one of the seemingly essential aesthetic principles of his music - that with Crazy Horse, he was trying to get "closer to the source". What does he mean by this? What is the source? And what does it mean to get closer to it? In the context of that blunt object known as Crazy Horse, Young seemed to mean: stripping down, turning up, not bothering to rehearse too much, and when the drummer finished counting four, beginning to wail. As he says to the crowd in one song featured in the documentary: "It's all one song!" .
